What to Expect at the Law Library

Patron Conduct

Our Facility

The Law Library is a place where people work, study and access the law. Cell phones, loud talking and other non-quiet activities are not allowed. We have 3 computers for public use for legal research purposes only. If there are people waiting to use the public devices, we will enforce a one-hour time limit per user. Wireless access is restricted to available legal databases and associated sites. No general internet access is available. See staff for connection information. Electrical outlets are not available to charge personal devices. Please make sure your device is fully charged before coming to the library. By using our computers and internet services, you will be deemed to have read and agreed to the terms of the Patron Conduct Policy and Patron Internet Use Policy.

The Basics

• This is a Library; bring your library voice. • Turn off your cell-phone. • No food or drink in our public areas. • Leave your carts, packs, vehicles, and large containers outside. • Users should be here utilizing library resources, no general internet available. • Children must be quiet and supervised. • Wear appropriate clothing. • Have appropriate bodily hygiene. • Don’t write in books or mark or scratch tables. • Don’t walk out with our books or materials. We don’t circulate them. • Don’t solicit, bother other patrons, or ask attorneys who happen to be here for information or advice. • Don’t bring comfort animals, pets, or unlicensed service dogs. Proof may be required. • Don’t charge personal devices, it’s prohibited. • Above all, follow the directions of Library staff. Intentionally Interfering with their lawful business, intimidating or obstructing them is a misdemeanor. Download our Patron Conduct Policy and Patron Internet Use Policy for more information.

Self-Help

• You are the “self” in the self-help process. • Staff cannot give you legal advice, fill out your forms, or answer direct legal questions. Staff can guide you to information and resources to help you do those things on your own. An example of this is that we cannot directly answer “what forms do I need to file for divorce?” We have a guide, however that lists the forms and the circumstances under which you would use them. Be preprared to read and to research. We are happy to guide you in the process. • Referring you to resources may require staff to ask questions related to what you are trying to research. These questions are tailored to help us help you without giving you legal advice. • Many patrons want to “tell their story.” Please don’t share the facts of your personal case with us unless we ask for specific information. Sharing can make it difficult to provide general information without giving specific advice. • Remember Library Staff are not attorneys, they aren’t trained in the law, they are trained to help you find the law.
