Self-Help
•
You are the “self” in the self-help process.
•
Staff cannot give you legal advice, fill out your forms, or answer direct
legal questions. Staff can guide you to information and resources to help
you do those things on your own.
An example of this is that we cannot directly answer “what forms do I need
to file for divorce?” We have a guide, however that lists the forms and the
circumstances under which you would use them. Be preprared to read and
to research. We are happy to guide you in the process.
•
Referring you to resources may require staff to ask questions related to
what you are trying to research. These questions are tailored to help us
help you without giving you legal advice.
•
Many patrons want to “tell their story.” Please don’t share the facts of
your personal case with us unless we ask for specific information.
Sharing can make it difficult to provide general information without
giving specific advice.
•
Remember Library Staff are not attorneys, they aren’t trained in the law,
they are trained to help you find the law.
